BEYNON SPORTS ‘DREAMFIELD’ ADAPTIVE SPORTS SURFACE IS CHANGING THE WORLD OF SPORTS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND (February 23, 2009) – With the 2009 MLB baseball season ready to take the mound, DreamField, the cutting-edge artificial adaptive sports surface by Beynon Sports Surfaces, is making headlines throughout the world of sports for some very “special” reasons.

Beynon Sports, a FieldTurf Tarkett company, has been a leader in the industry providing the best tracks and surfaces for world class athletes internationally; now with the inception of the  DreamField surface, children with special needs will be given the golden opportunity to do what they never dreamed possible - play in an organized baseball league.

For these children, games like baseball have only been a spectator sport—watching wistfully from the sidelines as a brother, sister, or friend played in the game. As much as they wanted to be in the game and play, traditional baseball fields have been filled with potentially hazardous and unsafe playing conditions for them. Thankfully, DreamField—the adaptive sports division of Beynon Sports Surfaces, has changed all that. This adaptive sports turf field is a special rubberized surface that is poured-in-place with no obstacles to be a hindrance to a child in a wheelchair or walker such as on a typical baseball field with the grass and dirt. It is also very forgiving during a fall, with a natural permeable texture that drains safely, and avoids slickness in wet weather. Now, DreamField players can round the bases and come in for a home run to the dugout full of high fives, cheers and elation just like any other traditional little league player.

When hearing about the opportunity to be a part of the adaptive sports industry, John Beynon, CEO of Beynon Sports Surfaces, made a commitment with his company to be part of this exciting new division. Explains Beynon, “After seeing an adaptive baseball game myself, I knew we needed to be a part of this extraordinary experience for both the special needs children and their families. They not only enjoy it so much, but they grow in their self esteem and confidence all the while they’re truly having the best time of their lives.”

As a parent of a child who plays on a DreamField team in Southfield, Michigan, Dan Tompkins has seen firsthand the monumental changes in his own son, John, and  the “win-win-win phenomenon” from being a part of  the whole experience. Explains Thompkins, “It’s a triple win situation for everyone involved. It’s a win for the special children involved, they gain so much self esteem and confidence,  a win for our families who thought the dream of watching our child play a sport had vanished, and a win for the community that benefits from being able to help our special All-Stars play and rewards that come along with having a DreamField.”

Plans are also being put into place for Challenger Leagues, the adaptive baseball division of Little League International, to roll out with a record number of adaptive fields in 2009, using the DreamField surface.  Challenger League director, Sam Ranck, sees the adaptive surface as a new and improved way of providing the best playing experience for their Challenger League teams. Explains Ranck, “We are excited and looking forward  to making Challenger League play the best ever for our children and their families with the addition of this new adaptive sports surface.”

Steve Peck, Vice President of DreamField division of Beynon Sports Surfaces, sees the future as an exciting new horizon for adaptive baseball and other sports. “It is our belief that the development of this new surface will open the door to special needs children all across the country and Canada, and provides them with the opportunity to play the game of baseball -America’s favorite pastime. After all, says Peck, ”Shouldn’t EVERY child have the opportunity to participate in a sport just like their able-bodied friends?”
